Y1 2025/16

To help parents keep up to date with what the children have been up to, updates to sections such as photos, videos and children's work will be sign-posted here.

Spring Term 2: In the English section, watch our marvellous end to our Superhero topic where the children show off their super power flying skills!

Our inspiration for this term will be an English country garden. Scroll down to see what fun the children are having this term!

This week the children have been asked to help find the Superhero 3D shapes who have been kidnapped from the planet 3D by the evil Zog. We have taken up this challenge by looking at each Superhero shape and discussing its properties so that we can produce our missing posters to help find them.

This week the children will be learning about fractions. We started today by revisiting fractions of shapes using cake to help us find half and a quarter. Over the week the children will move onto finding a half and a quarter of amounts with some children deepening their understanding through solving fraction problems.

The children have enjoyed listening to the story of Jack and the Beanstalk. Unfortunately, Jack's magic beans did not come with any instructions about how to plant them, so the children have been busy planting beans and writing instructions.

The children have been enjoying reading and writing about Supertato. They have made their own Supertato character and retold the story, through role play and writing. We have also been having lots of fun using green screen technology to take photos of us and our Supertato travelling to various destinations around the world. Check out some of our photos below.

We finished our superhero topic by reading Superkid and writing about what super powers we would have if we were a superhero. The children then created and wrote their very own story based on Superkid and I was so impressed with the amazing stories that they wrote.

To finish our topic we decided to put our newly found super powers to good use so we flew to the moon!

Fly me to the moon!

Visit your local library and help your child to read these superhero stories.

This half term we will be learning about Christianity and the Easter story.

Children will find out about what it means to be a Christian, in terms of the beliefs and symbols used.

They will learn about the Easter story and how Christians celebrate this festival.

********************************

Thank you so much to Reverend Samson Ake and his wife Reverend Wendy Ake who came along to talk to the children about Christianity. The children really enjoyed the visit and as you will see, from the video below, they came up with some fantastic questions to ask our visitors, to find out what it means to be a Christian.

Mrs Taylor, Miss Jones and Mrs Worrall.

Despite the cold, rainy day the children had a wonderful time at the Ezone. Thanks to Guy who arranged some super activities that included learning about Winter weather, a senses walk and stories around the camp fire with some much needed hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows. Delicious!

This term we will be learning about our school and our local area. The children have already undertaken field work, investigating the school environment using our senses. The children will be using Google maps to look at what landmarks are local to us and they will also be creating their own aerial maps of the school.

Talk to your child about your journey to school. What do you see?

How far do you travel to school?

Help your child to draw a map of their journey to school.

In maths, we are currently focussing on addition and subtraction facts. So far, the children have been learning their number bonds to 10 and they have been fishing for doubles.

Help your child learn their number bonds to 10 by playing a quick

     numbers game with them:

I'm thinking of a number. If I add 3 to that number I make 10.

     What's my number?

Just change the number that you are thinking of but keep making 10.

Practise doubling numbers to 10 with your child.

Practise adding three numbers where two numbers make a double or

     a number bond to 10.

     For example: 3 + 3 + 2 = (double 3 first) so 6 + 2 = 8

                          2 + 4 + 8 = (add 2 and 8 first) so 10 + 4 = 14

We are currently investigating seasonal changes focussing on Winter. The children have decided that they would like to find out about hibernating animals and different types of Winter weather.

We will also focus on answering this question asked by Dexter:

How long does a snowman last?

All we need now is for all this rain to become snow!

Help your child understand how days are shorter in Winter. When

doing activities throughout the day take notice of whether it is

light or dark outside. Ask your child to keep a log of their day:

We got up at 7am. It was dark.

We went shopping at 11am. It was light.

We had our tea at 6pm. It was dark.

Help your child understand different Winter weather.

Today is a cold day what clothes do we need to wear?

Notice the changes in temperature outside. Can you see frost?
Ice? Snow? Or just lots of puddles?

We have recently had a move around in our phonics groups and you will find that your child has a new phonics teacher.

Reading books will be given out at the end of the plan that the children are following. This does vary from group to group, so children in different groups may not bring a reading book home on the same day as children from another group.

We encourage the children to read the books two or three times before they are returned to school and swapped for the next book.

This is a really great site with interactive games and resources for parents, who would like to help their children at home. If you are not sure which phase is appropriate for your child, please ask and I will let you know. The games reinforce what the children are learning in the classroom and are a fun way for your child to practise their phonics skills at home.

Read Write Inc resources:

Help your child learn their tricky words. For each tricky word

that your child can read and spell they will get a sticker in their

     tricky word book.

Practise forming letters correctly with your child.

Our unit in PE up until half term is dance. It links to our work in science and focuses on the different seasons. Each week children will be exploring sounds of the seasons through movement. It will also incorporate some of the gymnastics skills that the children learned during our gymnastics unit in Autumn term.

Look at each of these animals and use the information below to help you work out which animal family they belong to. Write your answers down and bring to class to collect your super hero points!

Ezone Visit

We have had a lovely day of leaf art and animal den building. Check out some of our work below.

Leaf Art

The children were really creative using natural materials that they found on the ground. They worked in small groups and it was lovely to see so many using their imaginations.
