Year 5

Welcome back. I hope you all had a lovely Easter break and are now ready for the Summer term.

This half term children will be exploring story structure using a story from another culture. Dragon Slayer, which is an adventure story set in China, provides a very exciting model for the children to explore using pace and suspense to add excitement to their narratives.

Suggestions for wider reading:

Our non-fiction focus this half term links to the Dragon Slayer story and the children will be introduced to non-chronological reports through ‘A field guide for Ogre watchers’.

In History this term we are learning about Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. The children are really looking forwards to starting this topic. Ask them what they have learnt so far.

In science we are finding out about Forces. This follows on nicely from the work we did last term about Space and Gravity. We will be looking at important scientists such as Isaac Newton and how their discoveries contributed to Science as we know it today.

The children really enjoyed their day at the Space Centre before Easter. See below for some pictures from the day.

Spring 2017

Welcome back!

We would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and a fantastic holiday.

In Year 5 we are all ready to start the new year and show what brilliant learners we can be.

Please continue to help your children learn their times tables at home and encourage them to complete their homework which will help cement their learning in school.

Literacy and Language.

During these sessions we are going to be reading poetry. At the end of the unit we are going to write our own poems, which we are all looking forward to.

This term we will be travelling around the UK and the rest of the world. The children will be using maps, atlases and globes to locate the United Kingdom and other countries to look at human and physical geography around the world.

This half term we will be learning all about space in our new science topic ‘Earth, Sun & Moon’. We will be venturing out into space to learn all about the planets, our orbit of the sun and much more.

  Autumn Term

Welcome back to school. smiley We hope all of you had a lovely summer break and are now ready to get back to learning.

Working with Year 5 this year are Mrs Humphreys and Mrs Jones.

Scroll down for more information about what we will be up to in Year 5 this term…

Our first literacy focus this half term is a Greek myth called Prometheus and Pandora. This links in nicely with our history topic on Ancient Greece. We will be studying lots of other Greek myths this term as well as looking at some longer texts that relate to the topic - one of which is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. This text is available to borrow from most libraries or can be bought from bookshops or online.

To support their learning children should be reading some of the following titles…

In Year 5 we will be focusing on the 6x, 7x, 8x and 12x tables. Some children can already recall these facts but they all need to be able to recall them as fast as they can recall their own name. Therefore we will be practicing these lots in the classroom but if you practice with your child at home it will help to build their confidence and skills.

Important Messages.

P.E. will be every Tuesday. A big thank you to all parents who have provided their child with a new P.E. kit for this term.

Planners will be sent home every Friday and collected in every Wednesday. These are a valuable tool for parent/school communication. Please take the time to read and fill in your child's planner every week.

Homework will be given out when it fits in with what the children have been learning in class. They will have, on average, one piece of homework per week. Usually, homework will be given out on a Monday to be returned by Friday. However, children will be instructed when it will need to be in by and they will record this in their planners as well.
