The Summer term is nearly over and the children have almost come to end of their time in Year 6 and will soon become Year 7! Mrs Powell and I will miss them all and know that they will all be superstars when they move into secondary school!
Before they move on, we have got our summer production. This year we will be performing The amazing adventures of Superstan!! The children have all been practising hard and are fantastic!! The production will be on Wednesday 12th July 1.30 and 6.00. We hope that you will be able to come and see it!
Just a reminder that during SATs week (Mon 8th May - Thurs 11th May) we will be running breakfast club for all Year 6 children - this club will only be run Mon-Thurs and will not be available on the Friday.
We hope that you will encourage your child to come into school early, for a variety of breakfast choices. We have found, in past years, that running the club enables the children to begin the day in a relaxed and happy manner.
After we have finished test week, Year 6 have many exciting things to look forward to. We will shortly be auditioning for the end of Year, Key Stage 2 production, so look out for the grand unveiling of this years play...
Severn Valley Railway
On Monday 15th May, Year 6 will be going back in time to WW2, with an exciting trip on the Severn Valley Railway. The children will become evacuees, and find out what it would have been like to live during this time. Not only will we be travelling on the steam train, but we will also be taking part in traditional craft activities.
We are asking the children to come on the trip dressed as an evacuee and we hope that you will encourage your child to enter into the spirit of the day.
Throughout the Summer term, we will be continuing with our English work and will be writing around the topic of WW2. The children will be able to use the knowledge they gain during their History lessons to continue to bring their stories to life. We will also be looking at using this topic to write non-fiction texts, including newspaper reports.
This term, in English, we will be looking at stories that use flashbacks in order to show the past history of a character. The children will be taking part in plenty of drama activities in order to develop our understanding of the character. We will also be incorporating all of the new grammar skills that we have been learning - please ask your children to share their newly found knowledge with you!
Mrs Powell and myself were really pleased, last term, to receive lots of writing that your children had completed at home. We LOVE to see what the children produce, so if your child has written an amazing story, or created a poem or even designed their own Pokémon, we would love to see them.
In our countdown to SATS we will be focusing on the reasoning side of mathematics. We will be looking at shape, data, ratio and problem solving! It's not just about the answer, we need to know why!!!
We will also be continuing to practise our arithmetic skills and times tables, please help your children with learning this skill, especially within a timed environment.
We have lots of exciting topics to explore in History this term. We are going to continue to look at British Monarchs, finding out about Queen Victoria and then moving onto the current Royal family. Afterwards we will be looking at the cause and affect of WW2, including the Battle of Britain.
Our topic this term is Electricity, we will be conducting plenty of experiments looking at circuits and designing (and building) our own burglar alarm.
What an amazing first half term we have had - the children have really settled down and all are making huge progress.
It's that busy time of the year again. This year our Christmas production will be more traditional with carols and readings. We hope you will be able to join us - more information to follow.
In English we have been looking at poems and now we are moving onto mixing history with the present day, incorporating modern stories with a historical twist.
We are having a big push in SPAG to include homophones, contractions and passive/active voice. Please ask your child to tell you what they have learned.
Last week saw the majority of the class off on a 3 day residential to Sherwood Forest. Along the way we stopped at Nottingham Castle, investigating where the Sheriff of Nottingham resided, before venturing into the depths of the forest itself. Along the way we met up with Robin Hood, Friar Tuck and Little John, who shared some of their stories and knowledge of life, living as an outlaw.
We also learnt new skills, including building dens. This encouraged us to work together as a team and listen to one another, these are skills that will definitely help us during our time in Year 6.
In English this term, we will be looking at and writing legends, using Robin Hood as our inspiration! We will be using all the knowledge we gained while at Nottingham Castle and Sherwood Forest to create exciting stories. We will also be sharing our time on residential by writing recounts and thank you letters.
Our first term of Maths will see us securing our place value knowledge and looking at how this will enable us to solve complex calculations. We will also be working with decimals and looking at their relationship to whole numbers. Times tables are a very important part of Maths and in Year 6 these need to be re-called instantly. Please help your child to learn and become confident with their times tables, including the 12’s
As I’m sure you’re aware, grammar and spelling have become a big part of Year 6 sats tests. We will be having a big push on learning and applying many different grammar techniques this year. Please encourage your children to share their grammar knowledge with you.
Homework will be sent home on a Friday. This may include English, Maths or SPAG. We will expect homework to be returned by the following Wednesday. It is essential that children complete their homework as this will help them with their class work.
Year 6’s PE slot is on Wednesday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has a complete school PE kit and that all jewellery is removed.
This term Year 6 also have swimming on Tuesday afternoon, please send your child in with a swimming costume and towel
