Year 5 2019-2020

We had an absolutely brilliant time on our trip to the Thinktank in Birmingham. It was fascinating learning even more about space and we were amazed with how much we already knew!  We took part in three workshops throughout the day that were all very different but all absolutely brilliant. One of the best bits was the Planetarium and taking a tour of the night sky, it's amazing what you can see up there!!! Ask your children if they can point out some of the constellations to you and tell you the story behind them.

One of my favourite things learnt at the Thinktank (and I'm pretty sure it was one of the children's favourite too) was what happens to the astronauts poo. I bet you all want to know too now don't you?

Well...they eject it from the space station into space. When we look up into the night sky and think we are looking at a shooting star it could actually be astronaut poo burning up in the atmosphere. So if you have ever wished on shooting star and the wish did't come true you were probably wishing on poo!!!!

Here are some of the photos from our day at the Space Centre:

Welcome back!

We would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and a fantastic holiday.

In Year 5 we are all ready to start the new year and show what brilliant learners we can be.

In Maths we will be looking at angles, decimal numbers, converting between units of measure, fractions and much, much more.

Please continue to help your children learn their times tables at home and encourage them to complete their homework which will help cement their learning in school.

Remind them to access timestable rockstars and encourage them to move up through the ranks.

The children love the challenge of times table clubs every Monday in school so please celebrate there sucesses at home with them.

This half term we will be learning all about space in our new science topic ‘Earth, Sun & Moon’. We will be venturing out into space to learn all about the planets, our orbit of the sun and much more.

This half term we will be learning about the Shang Dynasty. This is a period in Chinese history. The Shang dynasty was in power during the Bronze age. The Shang dynasty took place in a time before written history was recorded so we are not only going to be learning about what the Shang dynasty was but also about how we know the information that we are being given is true.

Both the children and myself are very excited about exploring this history topic.

Welcome to Year 5’s website page for 2019-2020.

The children in Year 5 have made a wonderful start to the new term. Miss. Garner and Mrs. Powell are already proud to have each and everyone of them in their class.

Literacy and Language.

Our first literacy focus this half term is a Greek myth called Prometheus and Pandora. This links in nicely with our history topic on Ancient Greece. We will be studying lots of other Greek myths this term as well as looking at some longer texts that relate to the topic - one of which is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. This text is available to borrow from most libraries or can be bought from bookshops or online.

To support their learning children should be reading some of the following titles…

Our history topic this half term is studying the Ancient Greeks. We will find out who they were, what their lives were like, learn about battles and much much more. The children have absolutely loved the start to this topic so make sure they tell you about what we have been learning.

Properties and Changes of Materials.

In science this half term me are looking at properties and changes of materials. We will be carrying out lots of experiments looking at how things change and if that change is reversible or irreversible. We will also be investigating dissolving and evaporating. Keep your eyes out for exciting photos from our lessons.

In art Year 5 are going to be looking at the artist Charles Fazzino. We will be trying out different Pop Art techniques and learning lots of new skills.

During our RE session this half term children will be studying the bible and thinking about where the bible came from. We will be looking at different bible stories and thinking about their meanings.

A few reminders.
