Year 5 2018-2019

Harry Potter has taken over!!

The children returned to school after the Easter holidays to be transported away to Hogwarts. First of all they had to be accepted by Dumbledore so they had to write a persuasive letter. The very next day they were all accepted to Hogwarts and got sorted into their new houses! Tensions were running high as the sorting hat was put on each child's head to decide if they would be in Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff or Slytherin.

So far we have written how we felt getting sorted, a character description of Harry, Ron or Hermione and a description of the amazing Hogwarts castle. We are going to be writing newspaper articles, diary entries and howlers too!

This half term we are investigating forces in action. Lessons started off last week with a fantastic practical. Children had to use objects of different sizes and weights to see what kind of craters they would make in a box full of flour. The children really enjoyed the practical lesson and created some good craters.

Our History topic this half term is Viking's V's Anglo Saxons. We are all very excited to learn about this period in History as it is very brutal and bloody. We are looking forward to learning about the battles and how the Vikings took over.

We are studying Leonardo da Vinci this half term. We have been finding out about him and his work and we have also tried to recreate his most famous painting, the Mona Lisa.

Welcome back!

We would like to wish you a Happy New Year! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and a fantastic holiday.

In Year 5 we are all ready to start the new year and show what brilliant learners we can be.

In Maths we will be looking at angles, decimal numbers, converting between units of measure, fractions and much, much more.

Please continue to help your children learn their times tables at home and encourage them to complete their homework which will help cement their learning in school.

Remind them to access timestable rockstars and encourage them to move up through the ranks.

This half term we will be learning about the Shang Dynasty. This is a period in Chinese history. The Shang dynasty was in power during the Bronze age. The Shang dynasty took place in a time before written history was recorded so we are not only going to be learning about what the Shang dynasty was but also about how we know the information that we are being given is true.

Both the children and myself are very excited about exploring this history topic.

Literacy and Language.

Our first literacy focus this half term is a Greek myth called Prometheus and Pandora. This links in nicely with our history topic on Ancient Greece. We will be studying lots of other Greek myths this term as well as looking at some longer texts that relate to the topic - one of which is Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. This text is available to borrow from most libraries or can be bought from bookshops or online.

To support their learning children should be reading some of the following titles…

Children should already know their Times Table Rockstars log in and be using it at home to improve their times tables. Please encourage them to have a go at this at home. By now Year 5 should know all of their times tables off by heart.

I will be checking the Times Table Rockstars leader board each week and hope to see some of Year 5 at the top!

Our history topic this half term is studying the Ancient Greeks. We will find out who they were, what their lives were like, learn about battles and much much more. The children have absolutely loved the start to this topic so make sure they tell you about what we have been learning.

Ancient Greece Day.

Year 5 have had a fantastic day leaning more about ancient Greece from our special visitor. We have learnt about the armour the ancient Greeks wore and even held a sword!! We learnt about the different arrow types and why they were all shaped differently. We also learnt how to make an ancient Greek battle formation call the Phalanx. We got into partners and played a strategy game which some of us were fantastic at and we also completed mathematical puzzles.

I would like to say a big thank you to all parents who helped their children dress up to look the part today...they all looked fantastic.

Today we had great fun in Year 5 designing and carving our pumpkin for the Halloween disco.

Over the last few week Year 5 have been learning about different types of bread. We have done bread tastings, learnt what ingredients go into bread, made basic bread, designed our own bread and finally made our very own piece of bread. We had lots of discussions over what we could put into our bread. Some children put in cheese, some put in garlic, others used raisins, some used cinnamon and other used seeds or chocolate.

All of the bread we made turned out brilliantly and the children said they didn't just like it, they loved it.

Reindeer Run.

Thank you to all the children that have collected sponsorship money and bought it into school.

We had a fantastic day completing the Reindeer Run on Monday. We played lots of games, danced and then ran around the playground through the snow!!!
