Autumn 2020

Welcome to Year 6. Miss Garner and Mrs Pargeter, along with Miss Jones in an afternoon, are happy to be the Year 6 team this year.  Keep reading to find out what we’ve been doing...

English

We started our English journey this year exploring legends, including the legend of Robin Hood.  The children created their own interpretation of the story of Robin Hood, then turned this into a modern day TV report - I know some of you spotted these on the school Facebook page.

After this we looked at the art of newspaper reports and became journalists investigating the scandal of Robin Hood's wedding.

Maths

We started Maths this year looking at place value, thinking about how numbers are used and finding the difference between standard, extended and written forms.  We then moved onto looking at decimals, rounding them to a given place value and how they expand, as well as ordering and finding what needs to be added to make a whole.  This then led us onto working with the 4 different calculations, applying our place value knowledge in order to help us with our mental calculations.

We have also been practicing our arithmetic skills every week.

History

Our first History topic this year was titled Crime and Punishment.  The children explored crime and punishment throughout the ages, from Roman Britain, through the Anglo Saxons and Vikings, into WW1 and 2, ending up at present day.  We looked at how the justice system had evolved over the years and just how different today's punishments are from years gone by.

Science

Our first science topic was Classifying Organisms, we looked at how each living organism fits into a given group depending on its features.  We also looked at The Ten Kingdoms designed by Carl Linnaeus and The Theory of Evolution by Charles Darwin.

RE

Throughout Year 6, we will be looking at special stories within different religions, beginning with Hinduism.  In these topics we will be looking at the meanings behind them and the messages that they show.  We will delve into the beliefs held within these religions and look at the places that are important.

Art

You won't believe your eyes with our 1st art topic this year. The children will be creating art illusions which will trick you into seeing things in a different way.  Beginning with perspective art, the children looked at how to create the items which appear larger than they are.

Computing

Our first computing topic this year was coding. We learnt how to programme a sprite to draw different shapes by programming different algorithms. We learnt how to programme a button to change the colour of the pent and link a command to a text tab to tell the sprite which shape to draw.

Music

The children have enjoyed learning how to appraise different pieces of music. We have been looking at tempo, dynamics and texture in different songs. Children have learnt to appraise songs they have never heard before. They have also learnt how to play the glockenspiel along to the backing track of Happy.
