Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) at Brierley Hill Primary School

At Brierley Hill Primary School, we are committed to being an inclusive school where all children, regardless of their individual needs, are valued and supported to achieve their full potential. We believe that every child has the right to a high-quality education and to feel a sense of belonging, success, and well-being.

Our Inclusive Ethos

We celebrate diversity and recognise that all children learn in different ways. Our approach to SEND is rooted in the belief that inclusion is not an add-on, but a fundamental part of what we do. Through high-quality teaching, targeted interventions, and a nurturing environment, we ensure that children with additional needs are fully supported in all aspects of school life.

At Brierley Hill Primary, we:
✔ Foster a culture of respect, understanding, and high expectations for all learners.
✔ Provide individualised support through personalised learning strategies.
✔ Work in close partnership with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure the best outcomes for our pupils.
✔ Make reasonable adjustments to ensure every child can access and thrive in our curriculum.

Our Approach to SEND Support

We follow the graduated approach as outlined in the SEND Code of Practice, ensuring that children receive support tailored to their specific needs through:

  • Quality First Teaching – All teachers are responsible for meeting the needs of every child in their class.
  • Targeted Support – Small group interventions or additional resources to support learning.
  • Specialist Support – Working with external professionals such as Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and SEND Advisory Teams.

Joint Working for the Best Outcomes

We work collaboratively with a range of professionals and agencies to ensure our pupils receive the best possible support. This includes:
Dudley’s Local Offer – Access to a range of SEND services and support. Click here to find out more.
Educational Psychologists – Providing assessments and strategies to support learning.
Speech and Language Therapists – Helping children develop effective communication skills.
Health and Social Care Teams – Ensuring children’s well-being, including mental health support.

How Our Curriculum Meets the Needs of All Learners

We believe that every child deserves a rich, ambitious, and knowledge-driven curriculum that meets their individual needs. The CUSP curriculum ensures that learning is carefully sequenced, allowing children with SEND to build on prior knowledge in small, manageable steps. We provide:
Adapted teaching strategies to support different learning needs.
Visual supports and structured routines to aid understanding.
Multi-sensory approaches to engage children in learning.
Flexible groupings and additional adult support where required.
A strong focus on personal development, ensuring children with SEND build confidence, independence, and resilience.

Working with Parents and Carers

We recognise the crucial role of parents and carers in supporting children with SEND. We ensure:
Regular communication through meetings, emails, and phone calls.
Termly reviews of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and EHCPs (where applicable).
Workshops and training opportunities for parents to support their child’s learning at home.
