Art and Design

Art Vision

At Brierley Hill Primary School, we believe that art stimulates creativity, imagination and inventiveness. We believe that art gives our pupils the skills, concepts and knowledge necessary for them to express responses to ideas and experiences. It fires their imagination!

Detailed below is an overview of what your child will learn in Art through each Key Stage.

EYFS

In the Early Years foundation stage children will use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. They will represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through their art. Children will safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques and be encourage to experiment with colour, design, texture, form and function.

Key Stage 1

In Key Stage 1, children will be taught to use a range of materials creatively to design and make products. They will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Children will be taught to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space. They will learn about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.

Key Stage 2

Pupils in Key Stage 2 will be taught to develop their techniques, including their control and their use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. Children will create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas. They will improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials and of course, learn about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Progression will be assessed through evaluation of your child’s final piece or end of unit project and consideration of their responses and contributions to class discussions.
